In the age of ever-long-lasting makeup, the first step of your skincare routine aka cleansing is now more important than before. Here’s a gentle reminder why.
Everyone wants their makeup to last. Foundations that stay from 8am to 8pm, and hopefully, till midnight if you’re planning to stay out late. Lip makeup that hopefully doesn’t disappear with food and drinks; and the wish list goes on.
Well, be careful what you wish for.
The downside of all that glorious long-wearing makeup is getting rid of all that glorious long-wearing makeup. And for those who don’t wear makeup, you need to remove sunscreens, which are also meant to last on the skin.
Aside from makeup and sunscreen, excess sebum, sweat, bacteria (from hands touching your face or from someone’s sneeze), and airborne pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), ozone and cigarette smoke, add to your daily grime.
Think about all that grime on your skin before you hit the sack. If that hasn’t already grossed you out, here’s why else you should cleanse your face, pronto.
1. Clogged Pores Can Lead to Comedones and Acne
Makeup and impurities clog pores, and if they are not properly removed, you’re looking at a potential acne breakout. Even non-comedogenic skincare and makeup products, considered to be lighter textured formulas, can clog pores too.
2. Cleansing Allows for Proper Skin Functions
Absorption of Skincare
Proper cleansing primes your skin to absorb all the goodness from the rest of your skincare products. If you have poor cleansing habits, that defeats the purpose of all the money you’re splurging on serums and moisturisers.
Repair and Regeneration at Maximum Drive
Yes. Maximum drive. The skin goes through regenerative and reparative processes at night, shedding off dead skin cells and producing new ones, and boosting collagen and elastin production.
This is when skin cells need nutrients the most, and when the benefits of your skincare products have maximum impact. And the skin needs to be properly cleaned so that skincare can be optimally absorbed to allow for the best possible cell repair work. You would also need to use the right cleansing products for your skin type and condition.
3. Well-cleansed Skin Ages Gracefully
Cleansing is very essential for the skin to age gracefully.
The daily accumulation of impurities and airborne pollutants disrupts normal skin functions and causes inflammation in the skin. And inflammation generates free radicals (read: culprits of premature ageing), and also triggers various undesirable processes in the skin such as melanin production, which leads to pigmentation.
In other words, neglecting to properly cleanse your skin will damage and dull it.
So, cleanse on already.
