Washing your hair is and should be an uncomplicated affair. The steps: Wet the scalp and hair, spread shampoo over palms, lather up and massage scalp. Massage shampoo over every inch of the scalp and rinse off. Apply the conditioner into the drier parts of the hair, rinse off and hope for the best. Now what makes the process complicated is the first step: choosing the right products.
What is considered the “right” product? Well, it should contain ingredients that can penetrate deep into the hair as well as coat hair cuticles to leave it smooth to touch and strong enough to withstand breakage and split ends.
How Hair Care Strengthens Your Hair
Picture a wilting plant. It restores its vigour by absorbing and distributing nutrients from the roots to tips through the various vessels and veins inside the plant.
In the same way, hair health can be restored by sending the right ingredients from shampoos and conditioners through thin vessels inside hair called cell membrane complexes (CMCs). These CMCs are a part of the hair structure that holds cuticle cells together to prevent split ends and hair breakage. They also help nourish every strand of hair by delivering nutrients and water from inside out.
The Tsubaki Solution For Manageable, Beautiful Hair
With that, the researchers of Japanese hair care brand, Tsubaki, have also found that damaged hair has narrower CMCs, and that prevents damaged hair from getting the nutrients it needs. And so Tsubaki has developed a unique Capillary Penetration Formula in small molecular structures to improve penetration of ingredients in damaged hair.
This hair-loving formula is made up of five 100 per cent naturally-derived ingredients, namely Citrus Fruit Water to smoothen hair cuticles, Botanical Essence to boost and adjust moisture levels in response to humidity, Soy Protein to nourish and strengthen hair from the core to prevent hair breakage, Royal Jelly to deliver nutrients for hair growth from the roots, Camellia Japonica Seed Oil Extract to help give hair moisture, suppleness and shine. With this, Tsubaki created its new Botanical line to help you address the needs of your hair.
The Tsubaki Botanical Line: Simple and Effective
There are three ranges in the Tsubaki Botanical collection. The Moist and Manageable range to keep hair hydrated, soft and smooth, the Smooth and Silky range to tame frizzy and rough hair, and the Airy and Light range to create more voluminous hair.
To help you choose the right shampoo and conditioner, Tsubaki has simplified the process, too. Anyone can use any of the three ranges. And it doesn’t matter what your hair type is; whether your naturally straight/thin/coarse/curly hair has been chemically treated, coloured at home or at the salon, bleached and coloured, or chemically straightened or permed.
Simply focus on the results you want and pick the products you need. It’s really not complicated at all.
In-depth Reviews: Tsubaki Botanical Hair Care Products
To test the effectiveness of the Tsubaki Botanical products, the Superbly team reviewed all three ranges for two weeks. Here are the results of our trials.
Products tested: Tsubaki Botanical Moist and Manageable Shampoo and Conditioner
Lim Tsiao Hui, food and lifestyle editor
Hair condition: Normal hair with balanced scalp
Review: “Some shampoos tend to make my short hair limp or stiff, others make my fringe curl. It’s the aftermath of the wash, after my hair dries, that I decide if the shampoo is for me. The Tsubaki Moist and Manageable combo were off to a good start.
I like that the shampoo exudes a light floral-fruity fragrance that does not leave an overpowering, over-lingering scent on my hair. Just a pump of the shampoo gives a good lather that seems to cleanse my scalp and hair thoroughly. Leaving the conditioner in for about a minute or so seems to be enough for it to work its moisturising magic. And I’m glad that the conditioner does not need tons of water to rinse off.
On the whole, the Tsubaki Moist and Manageable Shampoo and Conditioner left my hair feeling light but not frizzy after every wash. It’s so cliched, but my hair does feel smoother and silkier. Even though it’s short, I like running my fingers through the strands now. And when it’s air-dried and combed, it settles into an obedient bob—without stray strands sticking out. After six days, the good results continued. And after two weeks of using the duo, hair’s never been better.”

Hair condition: Dry, brittle and damaged hair from regular bleaching and colouring.
Review: “My hair is thick, dry and has a natural curl. I have tried shampoos for coloured blonde or coloured brunette hair. However, all those products ever did to my bleached and coloured hair is further strip it of moisture, leaving it super dry and a mess to style. And these shampoos would also end up giving me scalp problems, making it dry and flaky.
The Tsubaki Botanical Moist and Manageable Shampoo is able to cleanse my oily scalp really well, without drying it out. I was pleased and relieved there was no flaking on my scalp. The Tsubaki Botanical Moist and Manageable Conditioner is a dream to use.
It was nourishing enough to leave my hair soft, flexible and easy to manage without any frizziness. And yet, my hair doesn’t feel weighed down at all. I also like that the use of this shampoo and conditioner duo doesn’t leave my scalp feeling greasy. And best of all, my hair colour isn’t stripped away as well.
After six days, my hair continued to feel smooth and moisturised. Even though this review only required me to test the products only for two weeks, my hair felt so good that I continued to use the shampoo and conditioner for two months, and counting, since I went bleached blonde.”
Products tested: Tsubaki Botanical Smooth and Silky Shampoo and Conditioner
Simone Wu, chief beauty officer
Hair condition: Dry, brittle, frizzy and damaged from regular bleaching and colouring.
Review: “I have fine hair and a lot of it. My bleached hair is always tangled somewhere at the back, and it’s difficult to spread shampoo evenly and thoroughly because of the tangles. I have to use a lot of shampoo. And I have to be extra careful when I shampoo through the tangles as I could end up breaking off parts of my hair (which has unfortunately happened.)
With the Tsubaki Smooth and Silky Shampoo, I no longer have this problem. The shampoo lathers up quickly. I don’t have to use a lot of it. And it spreads easily over the whole head. I was amazed that there were no more tangles as I shampoo.
Since my bleached hair starts at the root, I have to use a lot of conditioners to cover every bleached part. What I love about Tsubaki Botanical Smooth and Silky Conditioner is how easily it rinses out, and best of all, it doesn’t leave the bathroom floor greasy.
My bleached hair is very dry and frizzy so I would use a hair oil to tame the frizziness before I blow-dry my hair. And I have found that swopping my regular shampoo and conditioner for this Tsubaki duo leaves my hair smoother, and even more frizz-free. That means that the Tsubaki shampoo and conditioner are able to help close hair cuticles and smoothen rough hair even before I apply the hair oil.
Six days later, my hair is still wonderfully untangled as I shampoo. And it definitely looks smoother and silkier than before. There is no further improvement after two weeks. However, I must say that the shampoo and conditioner were able to maintain the results from the first wash.”
Products tested: Tsubaki Botanical Airy and Light Shampoo and Conditioner
Mia Chenyze, food and lifestyle editor
Hair condition: Fine hair that looks flat most of the time. Oily scalp, too.
Review: “The shampoo lathers well and has a faint, pleasant fragrance. I’m happily surprised that my hair does not feel dry or brittle after use. It’s always been hard to run my fingers through my hair when I am shampooing, and I really love that I don’t get this experience with the Tsubaki Botanical Airy and Light Shampoo.
Being used to thick conditioners, I was initially skeptical about the almost-watery texture of the Tsubaki Botanical Airy and Light Conditioner, and used too much of it for my first use. The light lotion texture makes it easier to spread the conditioner over my hair. I really love that it rinses off quickly. (I had a love-hate relationship with conditioners because it takes forever to rinse out. Well, not anymore.)
While I cannot see instant volume after blow-drying my hair, I noticed that these products gave my hair long-lasting volume. My hair is usually flat by the end of the day but I didn’t get the flatness with these Tsubaki products. After six days, my hair continues to feel smooth and tangle-free after I shampoo and condition.
The volume continues to stay on throughout the day, every day. And two weeks later, I have forgotten the days of tangled hair as this hair care duo continues to leave my hair full and untangled.”
